Dr. John Sarno — Lecture on Mind Body Syndrome / TMS
If you want to understand the roots of the mind-body pain movement, there's no better place to start than hearing directly from the man who started it all.
This video captures Dr. John Sarno delivering one of his original lectures on Mind Body Syndrome — the very presentations he would show his own patients alltheragedoc at NYU's Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation. Watching it today, it's remarkable how far ahead of his time he was.
What Sarno Understood That Medicine Didn't
Sarno noticed that many patients with back pain had identical X-ray and scan findings as people with no pain at all — which led him to search for underlying causes that better explained the discrepancy. He discovered that back pain is often driven by psychological processes: anger, fear, guilt, resentment, worry, and sadness. Painpsychologycenter
In his work, Sarno explained how the brain can cause pain as a protective mechanism — keeping intense emotions like rage or painful memories from surfacing into conscious awareness. He also noted that certain personality traits, like being highly responsible and hardworking, can heighten internal pressure and contribute to chronic pain. BJGP Life
Why This Video Still Matters
Since the 1980s, Sarno effectively treated conditions mainstream medicine called "incurable." His patients referred to him as "America's Best Doctor." Some of the nation's leading physicians expanded on his work and went on to write their own books, hold lectures, and successfully implement his methods in their own practices. Goodreads
Everything that has followed — Pain Reprocessing Therapy, the Boulder Back Pain Study, the work we do at Santa Barbara Chronic Pain Solutions — builds on the foundation Sarno laid. This lecture is a piece of history and a powerful education all in one.
